iHouse; The Eco-Friendly Manufactured Home
The iHouse was conceived as a moderately priced “plug and play” dwelling for environmentally conscious home buyers. It is a factory-built, customizable manufactured home that is so energy efficient that the builder, Clayton Homes, estimates it costs about $1 per day to cover all its electricity and heating needs.
The house makes use of solar panels, energy-efficient appliances, 2x6 exterior walls, bamboo floors, no VOC paints, heavy insulation, a rainwater-catchment system, a tank-less water heater, dual flush toilets, compact fluorescent lighting, rooftop deck, and low flow faucets.
The builder, Karsten Homes, is expecting so much demand for the iHouse that they estimate it could quickly become a large percentage of its total business. The iHouse is expected to cost about $100 to $130 a square foot, depending on amenities and upgrades. A stick-built house with similar features could range from $200 to $300 a square foot or more. The key cost savings is that the builder produces homes in volume in green standardized factories with very little waste.
Some say its name comes from the layout of the long, main “core” house and a separate box-shaped “flex room” resemble the letter “i” and its dot. A factory spokesperson says the “i” stands for “innovation, inspiration, intelligence and integration”.
The metal v-shaped roof combines sharp design with function. The roof provides a rainwater catching system for recycling. It also supports flush mounted solar panels and interior ceilings that vault at each end to 10 ½ feet for an added feeling of openness.
The "Energy Star" rated design features heavy insulation, six-inch thick exterior walls, cement fiberboard and corrugated metal siding, energy efficient appliances and dual paned, vinyl framed “low e” double glazed windows.
The prototype home weighs in at 52,000 lbs, which may be the heaviest home Clayton has ever built.
The final product will be available in different exterior colors and will allow buyers to design their home online.
